Washoe County schools open on August 17,2020. The Boys and Girl's Club of Truckee Meadows has used the last week to prepare their before-school, full day, and after-school programs.

The use of a mist spray cleaner isn't the only change the Boys and Girls Club of Truckee Meadows is doing during the pandemic in preparation for the new school year. Whether it's home schooling, distance learning, or hybrid learning, they want to be ready.

"They can come in and maybe they don't have an internet connection. They can connect to the internet. If they don't have a computer, we'll have a computer available to them. We'll have tutors available to help them ," said Boys and Girls Club of the Truckee Meadows CEO Mike Wurm.

Besides buying 200 additional computers and upgrading their internet technology, Boys and Girls club locations in Washoe County, are also creating more space for an influx of kids that come with the new school year. Gyms at their Reynolds, Pennington, and Carano facilities have been set up with tables and chairs socially distanced. "Kids working now they will have their individual supplies. We're not doing activities that might have a group of kids playing with one ball or something like that," said Wurm.

Sports activities and clubs are primarily canceled. The social recreation room and exercise room have also been changed. "You know we're not playing pool, ping-pong, and foosball which are mainstays of most Boys and Girls Clubs.>

Regular cafeteria lunch is being changed so students will eat in their classroom or learning area. "We're really being careful with not cross-contaminating kids. So when kids come in to the club, they are assigned to a room. They stay in the room all week. If kids come in after-school, then we are segmenting those kids into separate areas within the club," said Wurm.

The wi-fi coverage at several of their locations has also been expanded. So parents in the parking lot can connect to the internet as well.

The Boys and Girls Club of Truckee Meadows programs start Monday, but space is limited. Click here to reserve your spot.
