The ACLU of Nevada says it's suing the Nevada DMV for not releasing public records related to ICE communications.
The ACLU says between February and August 2025, the nonprofit civil rights organization submitted several requests to the state DMV for its internal policies related to ICE, but it says the DMV denied those requests.
The organization says the DMV turned over redacted documents only after a formal demand letter was sent through the Nevada Attorney General's Office.
Even with redactions, the ACLU says the DMV may have communicated with ICE using the Signal app and also requested personal data, including addresses and car registrations.
"We’re seeking a court order demanding the DMV release all requested records in compliance with Nevada law. Nevadans have a right to know the extent to which their government is cooperating with ICE, and the DMV has a legal duty to be transparent with the public," says the ACLU.
Reached for comment on the suit, A spokesperson for the Nevada DMV said the agency is not able to comment on active litigation.
