Former Reno Mayor Jeff Griffin passed away Thursday. He served as Reno's Mayor from 1995 to 2002.
According to his family, Mayor Griffin was diagnosed with cancer on July 4th of last year and was just weeks away from his 58th wedding anniversary when he died. He was 81 years old.
According to a statement released by the City of Reno, he was instrumental in regional transportation and development efforts and left behind a profound legacy of civic leadership and public service. He also served as chair of the Criminal and Social Justice Committee for the U.S. Conference of Mayors.
In recognition of his contributions, the City of Reno honored Mayor Griffin with a Reno People Award and a proclamation in 2018. Â
Reno Mayor Hilary Schieve released the following statement:Â
"My heart aches over the passing of former Mayor Jeff Griffin who made an incredible mark on our city. The entire City of Reno team sends our deepest sympathies to his wonderful family and everyone who was lucky enough to know him. Jeff was a successful businessman and visionary leader who helped champion the creation of Artown and supported our brave servicemen and woman by establishing the Veterans Day Parade. His love for the community made a big difference in the Biggest Little City."
