Nevadans are facing challenges in accessing affordable housing, whether due to inflation, high demand for housing, or corporate land ownership. This issue has now become a prominent topic in the presidential race.

On Wednesday, the Harris-Walz campaign held an event to tout Harris' affordable housing plan.

State Treasurer Zach Conine emphasized the difference between Vice President Harris' plan to reduce housing costs and former President Trump's plan, stating that Harris has presented practical solutions.

"We have a great down payment assistance program so far, but we are limited by our resources, and so the Harris-Walz plan put us in a place where we can put even more people into that program," said (D-NV) State Treasurer Zach Conine.

Conine also states that Harris is challenging a fundamental constraint on the housing supply - corporate ownership.

"Nevada has the highest rate of corporate ownership for both new housing and housing that is entering the market in order to artificially drive up supply, and the Harris-Walz plan really handles that with a market solution, which is there are tax solutions available for builders," said Conine.

The Harris-Walz campaign has promised tax incentives for builders who construct a specific number of affordable housing units.

Conine has stated that corporate investors who do not make affordable housing available to the market by either driving up costs or funding campaigns to block affordable housing efforts will not receive tax incentives.

"In Nevada, housing is an existential crisis. It is the most important thing. It impacts literally everything else. If we want an education system that can teach children, they need a place to rest their heads at night. If we want the entrepreneurial spirit to truly be unleashed in Nevada, folks need to not be worried about housing stability," said Conine.

The Harris-Walz campaign aims to build 3 million new housing units within the first four years to tackle the housing supply shortage and offer a groundbreaking $25,000 down-payment support for first-time homeowners.

Rob Benner, AFL-CIO Executive Secretary-Treasurer of the Northern Nevada Building and Construction Trades Council, stated that Kamala Harris is part of the most pro-union administration in history. He also mentioned that she has made affordable housing a top priority.

"The Biden-Harris administration has already spent a billion dollars to boost affordable housing, lower housing costs, and keep renters and homeowners in their homes," said Benner.

On Tuesday, in Michigan, Vice Presidential candidate J.D. Vance commented on the affordable housing crisis, attributing out-of-control inflation to the Biden-Harris administration.

"You talk to a young person today - young people cannot afford to buy a home in their own country. We're turning a generation of 20 and 30-year-olds into permanent debtors," said Vance.

The Harris-Walz campaign claims that the Project 2025 agenda will lead to increased costs for renting or buying a home.

Project 2025's plan for the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) involves a significant rollback of the federal agency.

"In housing, as they plan to throughout the government, to remove career public servants, and replace them effectively with toadies who will do the thing that Trump and his backers want them to do. That is their focus. So, instead of taking a Department of Housing and Urban Development that has been focused on the work, focused on bringing more housing to Nevadans and people around the country, we'll now have people in that office who don't know anything about how this works, and not to be weird but housing can be complicated sometimes. So we need experts doing it."

We contacted the Trump campaign regarding Project 2025 pertaining to affordable housing, and they provided the following response:

"Since the Fall of 2023, President Trump's campaign made it clear that only President Trump and the campaign, and NOT any other organization or former staff, represent policies for the second term. President Trump personally led the effort to establish 20 promises made to the forgotten men and women across our nation, as well as the RNC Platform -- this Agenda 47 is the only platform endorsed by President Trump for a second term. Dangerously liberal Kamala Harris and the DNC are LYING and fear-mongering because they have NOTHING else to offer the American people. Remember, these are the same people that lied to Americans and hid Joe Biden's cognitive decline all these years and are currently lying about Kamala Harris serving as the border czar, being responsible for out-of-control inflation, and failure across on every front." – Danielle Alvarez, Trump Campaign Senior Advisor
