A day on Lake Tahoe can be just as enjoyable for a four-legged passenger, but pets need some extra preparation before they climb aboard. As summer winds down, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department Marine Unit is reminding boaters about several simple ways to keep their pets safe on the water.

According to the South Lake Tahoe Police Department in an online post, pets should wear a properly fitted life jacket and have plenty of fresh water available to stay hydrated.

The department also recommends providing pets with shade and watching for signs that they are getting too hot. Boaters should keep pets away from the prop and use a ladder to help them back aboard.

The Marine Unit said a little planning can mean more time for pets to enjoy the water and safer outings for everyone aboard.
