More than 320 Amazon employees are expected to be laid off when the north Reno fulfillment center shuts down in August.Â
The tech company disclosed the information in a letter dated June 2 to the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation.
Amazon says affected employees have been notified of the change and say employees who want to transfer internally to other Amazon operations can do so without losing their job - before the closing date.Â
A list shows that managers, service technicians and drivers will be among those laid off.Â
Amazon representative Steve Kelly told 2 News Nevada, "As we wind down operations at our Reno fulfillment center, we're working closely with all affected employees to provide the latest information about transfer opportunities at other Amazon facilities in Reno and elsewhere. For employees who choose not to remain with Amazon following this closure, we're offering support through this transition."
Last October, the company told us part of the reason for the closure has to do with the lease expiring on the property.
“We weigh a variety of factors when deciding where we open new facilities, enhance existing facilities, and close others – including business need as well as how we can best improve the experience for employees, customers, and partners."
Information previously provided by Amazon says the closure will not impact Amazon customers in the Reno area.Â
There is a same-day delivery center being built in south Reno with the process slated to continue into 2026. Employees affected by the fulfillment center closure will receive advance notice about hiring opportunities at the new facility.Â
More than 100 employees have already accepted transfers to other Amazon facilities.
