Love it or hate it, Valentine’s Day will be partly cloudy with temperatures in the upper 50’s. Meteorological spring starts March 1st, but it’s been feeling like spring already for quite a while now. It’s been a pretty quiet winter season with only a few decent snow storms. Looking back over the years, snow is not very common on Valentine’s Day. The average high in Reno, for this time of year is 50 degrees. Looking back over the past 80 years, we were in the 50’s most of the time, followed by the 40’s. One time we even made it up to 72 degrees. That was on February 14th, 2015. We’ve been in the 30’s seven times on Valentine’s Day since 1938.
Last year we got a dusting of snowfall out at the Reno Airport with highs in the upper 40’s and lows in the lower 30’s. In 2015 we reached 72 degrees which is the one time we reached the 70’s on this date in Reno since 1938. Last year Tahoe City got a few inches of snowfall with high temperatures in the low 40’s. They also got eight inches of snowfall back in 2009. Like many other dates, we can see a wide variety of weather on Valentine’s Day in Northern Nevada. Spring and fall are known for being transition seasons where the weather tends to be even more sporadic. That’s what has been happening lately with several days of mild weather followed by a couple days of cold weather.
According to climate, there is only a seven percent chance of having a dusting of snowfall on Valentine’s Day at the Reno Airport. Goes down to one percent chance for an inch. Tahoe City has a 24 percent chance of having an inch of snowfall on Valentine’s and an eight percent chance of six inches or more.
Not looking at any snow this Friday with temperatures expected to be in the mid to upper 50’s. Winds will be light too. Have a lovely day.
