Washoe County District Attorney says a Sparks man was sentenced to 40 years in prison for attempted murder and felony battery.Â
The DA says 21-year-old Cesar Eduardo Romero-Manzo of Sparks was sentenced on December 15 on one count of Attempted Murder with a Deadly Weapon and one count of Battery with a Deadly Weapon (BDW) Causing Substantial Bodily Harm.
Authorities say the charge of attempted murder presented a unique challenge to prove in Nevada by presenting evidence that Romero-Manzo had intended to kill the victim. They say Romero-Manzo made calculated steps to murder the victim by wrapping the firearm in a bandana and shooting the victim in the chest.
Officials say Romero-Manzo received 20 years for the attempted murder charge, a second consecutive 20 years for the use of a deadly weapon, 15 concurrent years for the BDW charge and an additional six years for a separate attempted robbery charge from a separate case. They say Romero-Manzo will be eligible for parole after 16 years.Â
The investigation began on February 10, 2015 when the Sparks Police say they responded to a shooting near Standford and J Streets.
Authorities say Romero-Manzo had crashed his vehicle into the victim's vehicle near Stanford Street and that the victim grabbed a baseball bat and confronted Romero-Manzo. They say Romero-Manzo got out of his car and shot the victim in the chest with a .22 revolver. After being shot, the victim disarmed Romero-Manzo and began hitting him in the head with the revolver and then drove himself to the hospital.Â
At the hospital, detectives say the victim, a 20-year-old man from Sun Valley told them that he had been shot after a confrontation with his girlfriend's ex-boyfriend, identified as Romero-Manzo. Detectives say they determined Romero-Manzo had been harassing his ex-girlfriend and the victim for some time.
