With the temperature finally starting to heat up, we won’t be the only ones spending more time outside, it's about to be mosquito season, and Washoe County taking pro-active measures to limit the number of these pests.
Washoe County is taking the skies, but not for a joyride. They have in tow a specific pest killing chemical that is designed to curb the mosquito population.
“We larvicide certain areas in our wetlands to make sure that the mosquitoes don't emerge into biting adult mosquitoes,” said Phil Ulibarri, Communications Manager for the Washoe County Health District.
Washoe County says the larvicide poses no harm to humans, pets, or even other insects.
“They are environmentally safe, they will not kill honey bees or other beneficial insects, it only targets larva of mosquitoes,” said Ulibarri.
Officials are getting an early start, as they tell us it only takes a few days of warm weather for the larva to mature into adult mosquitoes. And with the wet winter we had, the snow pack could mean higher water levels.
Washoe County has a couple of tips to help keep you bite free. They say to wear long sleeves and long pants in the early morning and evening hours. That is when mosquitoes are most active. Use repellent your skin and on your clothes for extra protection. And clear any standing water in and around your house. That includes cleaning your pet’s water bowls.
“A mosquito can breed in the space of a small cap full of water, so it doesn't take much," said Ulibarri.
