After Volkswagen’s emissions scandal, the automaker has given settlement money to different states across the country.
One of the projects being funded in Nevada is clean technology for Waste Management trucks.
The money will be used to help buy firve new natural gas trucks. That would replace some of the diesel trucks they have, and for officials, that’s a much needed investment in Washoe County.
“The state considers Washoe County a high priority area, because of the population,” says Greg Martinelli with Waste Management.
The replacement of each truck will help save 8,000 gallons of fuel per year. That is about a 15% reduction per truck in greenhouse gas emissions. Each one costs $288,000, and the grant will help them with $45,000 per truck.
The new ones will be here within the next two years.
