The Washoe County School District (WCSD) is celebrating Teacher Appreciation Week from May 6-10, acknowledging and celebrating the vital role teachers play in shaping the future of our community and our world.
“We are blessed and fortunate to have such talented and dedicated teachers whose hard work supports our 64,000 students on their academic journeys,” said Board President Katy Simon Holland.
Superintendent Traci Davis said in part, “As a former teacher myself, I know how hard our teachers work and how many hours they devote to their educational mission.”
Former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt asked the U.S. Congress to establish a National Teacher Day in 1953 and the National PTA established National Teacher Appreciation Week in 1985.
Thanks to generous gifts from our sponsors, there are also some fun events planned to celebrate teachers throughout the week:
• Monday, May 6: All schools will receive fresh Dunkin’ Donuts that will be delivered thanks to Western Governors University (WGU). Many of our leadership team members and other administrative staff are participating in the delivery and are excited to bring these treats to our well-deserving teachers.
• Tuesday, May 7: Dutch Bros. coupons will be provided to all schools.
• Wednesday, May 8: Ice cream will be delivered to all schools donated by Aramark.
• Thursday, May 9: Teachers are invited to enjoy a free meal at Burger King.
• Thursday, May 9: Education Alliance will be hosting its annual “Shop ‘Til You Drop” event. The event will be held from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Teachers’ Warehouse at 380 Edison Way in Reno. The Warehouse is loaded with great supplies donated by our community, from furniture to books to decorations and crafts to enhance learning in your classroom. There will be food, music and a giant raffle at the event, with generous prizes and gift cards from multiple businesses and organizations around the community.
• Friday, May 10: Domino’s pizza and water will be delivered to all schools thanks to generous donations from CORE, Grand Canyon University, and Aramark.
