Community Thanksgiving Dinner in Fernley

There are a few places you can get a free Christmas meal this week.

From JA Nugget:

Continuing an annual tradition, the owners of the Nugget Resort in Sparks will provide approximately 1,400 Christmas meals to people in need at St. Vincent's Dining Room on Christmas Day, December 25, 2014 beginning at 11:30 a.m.

“It's important to me to continue the Nugget's long history of philanthropy in the Northern Nevada community,” said Carlton Geer, President and CEO of JA Nugget. “So many people in our community depend on the Nugget's Thanksgiving and Christmas meals at St. Vincent's. We want to continue these programs and enhance them, if possible.”

This will be the 60th consecutive year the Nugget has provided free Thanksgiving and Christmas meals to an area shelter. It is the 53rd year with St. Vincent's Dining Room. The food served on Christmas Day is the same high-quality food that will be served to guests at the Nugget's own Christmas Buffets.

People in need of a Christmas meal are invited to St. Vincent's Dining Room at 11:30 a.m. on Christmas Day. The dining room is located at 325 Valley Road in Reno.

St. Vincent's Dining Room, as part of Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada, has welcomed the hungry with open arms for decades. The Dining Room serves an average of more than 500 meals per day, six days a week.

From Reno-Sparks Gospel Mission:

More than 800 men, women and children are expected to attend the Reno-Sparks Gospel Mission's annual Christmas dinners at 11 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 25 at the Mission, 355 Record St., Reno.

Because of the increased need, the Mission is serving two dinners on Christmas day.  The 11:00 a.m. dinner will be a full dinner, with a visit from Santa, gifts for the children, stockings for teens and hygiene kits for the adults. Jackets will also be available for those needing warm clothing.

Some of the organizations and businesses providing donations to this lively holiday event are Harrah's (teen stockings), the Big Reno Coat Drive (jackets) and the Reno Aces (toys).

The 4:00 p.m. dinner will feature a full hot turkey meal.

In addition, the Mission will serve approximately 250 elderly residents at two senior citizen centers throughout the day.

Toys, hats, gloves, scarves, and hygiene items, such as soap, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, lip balm and lotions, can be dropped off at the Mission's administrative offices at 2115 Timber Way, Reno. Monetary donations can be made through its website at www.rsgm.org.

For details, call 323-0386, Ext. 16.
