Reno's 2nd Annual Women's March Saturday

The 4th annual Reno Women's March is set for Saturday, January 18. It starts at 11 a.m. at City Plaza in Downtown Reno and usually draws a crowd of thousands. This years theme is, "When Women Thrive, We All Thrive."

"This is 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote," said organizer Jackie Shelton. "So we've come a long way, but we have a long way to go. This is a way for us to come together, get the information we need, and figure out what's next. We know what we've accomplished for ourselves, what do we want for our daughters and granddaughters. Obviously, when they thrive, their families thrive, their communities thrive."

Everyone is welcome here.

"It's a nonpartisan event," Shelton said. "We love men, we want them to come, all ages, all genders, all ethnicities. Everybody is welcome."

The March will go to the Reno Events Center on Center Street.

"Inside, until 3:00 p.m. we're going to have about 100 nonprofit organizations that are going to be sharing information so people can find out how they can volunteer and donate," Shelton said. "We're also going to have candidates. Most of the major Presidential candidates are going to have representatives and we have everybody from Congress down to local school boards, so you can talk to them directly, find out what they stand for and decide who you want to support."

There will be a chance to learn more about the political process as well.

"We cover everything," Shelton said. "We're going to have representatives from all the different issues, from all the different candidates, you can register to vote, you can learn about caucus. It's everything here all on one day on a Saturday in January in Reno. Come and learn everything you need to know about the process and about the community."

Organizers have been planning the event for months; UNR's Office of Diversity and Inclusion is a major sponsor this year.

"It's a way to come together with people you can talk to and think about how you can make the world a better place," Shelton said. "The ultimate goal is to make our community better, which makes our world better, and to give people the tools to do that."
