With the Red Flag Warning and recent brush fires, the American Red Cross Of Northern Nevada is putting out a warning. The executive director of the organization says we all need to be prepared to evacuate in case of a wildfire.
As history has shown with the Little Valley Fire, Washoe Drive Fire, Angora Fire, and Caughlin Ranch Fire, wildfires can overtake a home wherever it hits. Homeowners need to be prepared because it's wildfire season again.“Be informed. Listen to television and radio for updates and practice evacuations with your family. Make a plan,” said American Red Cross Of Northern Nevada Executive Director Zanny Marsh.
According to the American Red Cross Of Northern Nevada, part of that plan should include an evacuation or preparedness kit. A flashlight and water are some of the more obvious things needed in that kit.“Take a backpack or something else that you can carry easily. Have the kinds of supplies in it that make the most sense for you and your family. That might mean having important documents or having an extra supply of medication,” said Marsh.
Toiletries are important.“Bring toothpaste and toothbrush. A little bit of soap,” said Marsh. Pack food and drink into the kit.“Bring non-perishable food items and drinking water that may not be in plastic. So, bring stainless steel water bottles that are empty,” said Marsh.
People should not only have an evacuation plan. They should also practice evacuations.“What we know is that muscle memory will kick in if you find yourself under stress,” said Marsh. Pick a spot to meet up later. “You want to be far enough away from your neighborhood or your office that a disaster is not going to impact you. But close enough that everyone knows where they are going to meet and mobilize,” said Marsh.
The Red Cross recommends that you use expandable bags when making your preparedness kit. And include non-perishables like granola bars in that kit.
