Artisan Show and Sale This Weekend in Reno

For 21 years, the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship has held its annual Artisan Show and Sale. The crafts are all made by hand, and they are all made in the region.

"None of the work we have here is imported," said Mark Bacon, a volunteer with the fair. "It's all made right here in Northern Nevada."

There are 31 artists who participate in the fair, and believe it or not, they had to earn their spot from a jury selection.

"They're either selected or they're not," said Bacon. "We try to not only get a high quality, but a variety of things."

From bedazzled pie cutters, to Christmas candles, there's probably something for everybody on your holiday shopping list.

Kay Harbeck spends her time knitting scarves and hats. She admits the value of hand-made crafts isn't what it once was.

"There's so many things that are mass produced that people think, 'Why would I spend that amount of money for a scarf when I could get three from Walmart?'" said Harbeck.

She knows there are still people who appreciate the work .

"They're looking for unique and different things and they appreciate handwork."

The making of some of this work takes quite a bit of time. Kathleen Hallamore, a glass artist who is well known in Reno, is showing off her fused glass jewelry. It takes two days to complete.

"Multiple pieces of glass are put into a kiln, taken up to 1,400 degrees, and then cooled gradually and slowly so they're not stressed," said Hallamore.

And she does it all from her house.

The fair is Friday, November 6, 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday November 7 Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 780 Del Monte Lane, Reno.Â
