The BLM says a wildfire near Washoe Lake State Park south of Reno was started by target shooting.

The 3-5 acre Duck Hill Fire started around 11:15 a.m. on Thursday, and is 50% contained.

In addition, the BLM is seeking information on a red utility vehicle that was last seen on Goni Road toward Carson City. The BLM says the people involved started the fire and left the area without reporting it to 911.

“Though the weather has turned cooler and the days have shortened, the fire hazard has not improved, said Ryan Elliot, BLM Lead Fire Investigator. “Fuels on the rangelands are the driest on record for this time of year. Any ignition source is capable of causing a fire.”

Fire restrictions are currently in place. In prior years, shooting activities and off-road vehicle use has accounted for the highest number of human caused fires in the months of September and October.
