The Douglas County Sheriff's Office wants to remind the public of hiking safety after a search and rescue that happened on July 4, 2018.

A father, his three sons and a household assistant were visiting the Tahoe Rim Trail south of Stagecoach Lodge in Douglas County when one person of the group was separated from the others around 12:45 p.m.

Members of the mountain bike rapid response team were dispatched to search the Rim Trail. Around 4 p.m., a motorist driving down Kingsbury Grade saw a person flagging down traffic and stopped. The motorist drove the missing hiker back to their vacation rental and the Douglas County Search and Rescue staging area.

The missing hiker was dehydrated but was evaluated and released to the family.

Douglas County Sheriff's Search and Rescue wants hikers to remember to carry enough water, stay within sight of others, carry sunscreen and a map, hike during daylight hours and to wear sturdy footwear when hiking.
