The Department of Education is set to erase $150 million worth of student debt thanks to a rule called the "Borrower Defense to Repayment."
The move will benefit about 15,000 lenders and students who were taken advantage of by "for-profit" colleges.
A federal judge ordered the rule be re-implemented despite Education Secretary Betsy DeVos trying to block the move for months.
DeVos has said the rule is "bad policy" and still aims to replace it, but it could be 2020 before any new rule takes effect
Borrower advocacy groups and some Democrats applauded the loan discharges, but several said it shouldn't have taken a court order to get relief for students.
