Three pyrotechnicians have spent the past two days setting up hundreds of fireworks that will result in thousands of explosions at midnight in downtown Reno.
"These are 2" mortars that are empty now," said project leader Brian Deaton. "But they will all be filled and set in plenty of time."
Because of the cold it's taking them a little longer to get things all set for this particular show. But they are moving along. They know their show will be the centerpiece of a lot of partying in downtown Reno tomorrow night.
"We have so much going on," said Silver Legacy General Manger Glenn Carano. "We have a big dance party starting here in the dome of the Silver Legacy at 10 and at Rumbullions and Aurora we have parties staring at 9:00 and going all night."
And he knows investing in the fireworks will help pack the casinos before and after the excitement outside. In addition they will be shooting off confetti cannons inside the dome at midnight. "That way some people can just stay inside and stay warm and still be a part of it all," Carano said.
The fireworks will go off from three different location on the roof of the Silver Legacy giving more people at more locations better views. And the pyrotechnicians want everyone to know that their appreciation for the show is much appreciated from the roof.
"We can hear the crowds and that's our big payday," Deaton says. "We love to hear the crowd applaud; it gives us goose bumps. So please do...and enjoy the show!"
Virginia Street will be closed from First to Sixth Streets from 10 p.m. New Year's Eve until 1 a.m. New Year's Day.
