All you Northern Nevada drivers know - this has been an unprecedented year for road construction. So we asked the head of the RTC when we can expect all the cone zones to clear up.
He says in short - not anytime soon.
Some of the major projects like McCarran Widening will wrap up this fall.
But then work will start on parts of Pyramid Highway - and the final phase of the SouthEast Connector.
Regional Transportation Commission Director Lee Gibson says it's necessary as our area grows. "We are seeing a large increase in jobs and we are seeing a diversification of our economy. This is going to present a number of transportation challenges that the SouthEast Connector will be able to meet in the short term."
In 2017, they'll completely re-do Virginia Street through downtown and midtown. They also want to improve the Spaghetti Bowl - and possibly add a commuter rail line out to the Tahoe Reno Industrial Complex.
"The Tesla folks would like to see that carbon-free footprint, and if we see some of the job numbers we realized, I think a commuter rail service is something we need to take a hard look at,” says Gibson.
