Starting Friday, Lyon County students will be able to connect digitally to a doctor while they're at school. This will help families in rural areas who don't always have access to healthcare.
"We are a rural county with very few doctors, our parents can wait up to two months to get a kid into a routine visit," says Lyon County School District nurse, Jeannie Bisard.
Students will use a device to get in touch with a primary care provider, through 'Hazel,' who would be able to prescribe treatments or medications.
With an average of 15 elementary students sent home sick on a daily basis, they hope 'Hazel' will allow them to increase class attendance and help parents.
"We see this as being an answer to a problem we haven't been able to solve -- parents not being able to get off work to come pick up their kids when they're sick, parents not being able to afford to take their kids to the doctor because they have to take time off from work and they can't afford to take time off," says Bisard.
The program starts Friday but it won't be available in every school right away. Families in Lyon County will eventually be able to use it from home as well.
