Our Someone 2 Know this week came to Reno about two years ago.
Aaron Foster is an artist, an actor - and now a restaurant owner in our burgeoning Midtown. He's tested the menu on local friends - and officially opened the doors to “Food + Drink” last week.
There’s no big signage, so you’ll have to look for the spot between Jo Stella Coffee and Perenn Bakery, in a classic brick building on St. Lawrence Avenue.
This is what it's all about - delicious food, made from scratch, using fresh ingredients.
Prepared with plenty of creative flare.
"I do a 12-hour slow roasted pork, we do a mango-avocado salsa, homemade sour cream with lime and cilantro, pickled onions,” explains Foster.
It’s a purposely small menu.
"So we focus really on just a couple of things, just kinda the things I make good enough to charge money for, mainly pizza and tacos."
All house made - even the tortillas, which Aaron takes very seriously.
"First time I had a flour tortilla, which I made in a cooking class about six years ago, I just felt my whole life had been a lie."
If you notice a flare for the dramatic, it just so happens Aaron is also an actor - who not too long ago - worked in Hollywood.
"It went pretty well, actually," smiles Foster, “I ended up hosting a show on HGTV for a while and that ended and I just figured, 'I'll just get another show.' Apparently, it doesn't work like that."
Aaron also channels his creativity into his artwork, which you’ll see hanging on the walls at Food + Drink. The multi-media pieces are designed using carefully selected license plates.
"For something like John Wayne, there's California, where obviously he spent time in L.A. and Hollywood and all that and Iowa where he was born."
Aaron has been creating and selling the art for almost 20 years and says now his big focus is on food.
"...And trying to find a way to do it a little bit differently than it's been done before, I don't' know, it's just the most rewarding thing I've ever done."
