In 1992 our Someone 2 Know emigrated from Russia to the United States. Some four years later, she made her permanent home in Washoe County - and ever since, has been sharing her cultural heritage with northern Nevadans
Meet Reno resident - Galina Ohanian;
"Russian, Russian, Samovar,” explains Galina, describing various small magnets on her fridge, before offering us delicious homemade delights; "This traditional - Russian Piroshki". The platter is full, Galina’s accent is thick, and her hospitality is genuine and heart-warming.
One look around her home, and it's clear that Ohanian's love for her homeland runs deep.
Galina grew up in a town about three hours from Moscow; "Gus-Khrustalny,” Galina tells us with a flourish and her hand and arm bent to look like a goose. Translated as “Crystal Goose”, the town is known as the oldest center of the glass industry in Russia.
It was there Galina would learn to dance.
"Five years old - mm hmm - 37 years in Russia, 37 years, I dancer, dancer, dancer."
Now 74, Galina is still a dancer and most notably the director of an ensemble called Gold Domes Of Russia.
"We dance traditional Russian dances, which is very rare and unique now - even in Russia now" explains Irina Pearson, a friend and dancer in the ensemble.
Traditional headdresses, gowns and jewelry - all hand made for performances by the ensemble Gold Domes of Russia.
"Gala is my inspiration,” smiles Irina, “and she is an inspiration for all of us."
The two women have been friends for over 20 years.
"This petite little woman, she is amazing,” glows Irina, “She is always creating something new."
For decades Galina has choreographed and organized dances and cultural events in northern Nevada; “eight Russian festivals, here, eight, 22 party New Year.”
And she has no plans of slowing down - next week, a big show at the Carson City Community Center;
