June 1st is the first day of Meteorological summer and it will feel like it a week early. There is a good chance that we will see our first 90 degree temperature at the Reno Airport this coming week. We have several chances to do so. While temperatures are forecasted to be in the 90’s Tuesday through Friday, the best chance to tie a record will be on Tuesday and Wednesday. We’ll probably come a couple degrees shy on Thursday. This will be the first heat wave of the year. Temperatures will also be slow too cool off at night with lows around 60 degrees. It will be great weather to open up the windows and get some free air conditioning. Make sure to drink plenty of water and social distance. Memorial Day will be very nice with highs in the mid 80’s, mostly sunny skies and light winds.
Mother Nature got it right this year. June 4th is when we usually see our first 90 degree temperature at the Reno Airport. We’re only a week early. June 4th is the 30 year average. Last year we hit 90 degrees for the first time on June 4th too. In 2012, the first time we hit 90 was on April 22nd. Dare I say it, but once we hit 90 degrees, the next temperature to talk about will be 100. That’s nowhere in sight for now though.
The ridge will build in from the west and strengthen on Tuesday. As the ridge grows taller the jet stream moves farther north and the storm track moves farther north as well. High pressure compresses the air and heats it up. More sunshine allows us to warm as well. The ridge will be slightly east of Reno on Thursday. It will be close enough to keep us in the 90’s, but also far enough east to open the door for a low to drift up from the southwest. The low to the southwest will provide us with some moisture later in the week. Combine the instability with warm temperatures and thunderstorms are possible by Wednesday. This will mainly be in the mountains. Temperatures this week will be in the upper 70’s and low 80’s around Lake Tahoe. We are still several days away so there is a good chance the thunderstorm forecast will change somewhat by then. Have a good day and enjoy the warm weather.
