Southern Nevada had recorded its first human case of West Nile Virus this year.
The Southern Nevada Health District says that person is a woman who has recovered from the more serious neuroinvasive form of the illness. She's described only as over 50 years old.
Clark County had no reported human cases of West Nile last year.
West Nile virus is not spread person to person but rather is spread through the bites of infected mosquitoes that have acquired the virus by feeding on infected birds.
Many people with the virus will have no symptoms or very mild clinical symptoms of illness, but in some cases, the virus can cause severe neurologic illness and even death.
The district recommends removal of standing water at homes and use of EPA-approved repellent.
