Parents Weigh in on WCSD Superintendent Change

Former Washoe County School District Superintendent Pedro Martinez has been named one of two finalists in the search for the next district superintendent in San Antonio, Texas.

Martinez is competing against Scott R. Muri, Deputy Superintendent of Academics for Fulton County Schools in Atlanta, Georgia for superintendent in the San Antonio Independent School District, or SAISD.

“The search process produced almost 40 very qualified candidates and for obvious reasons these two were selected as finalists,” said Board President Ed Garza. “Both candidates have strong track records in results-driven leadership, which will undoubtedly lead to transformational change in student achievement and will elevate SAISD to become a national model urban school district.”

In January, Governor Brian Sandoval announced during his State of the State address that he asked Martinez to serve as a superintendent in residence at the Nevada Department of Education, where he is currently.

Martinez was fired from his job in Washoe County last year, but the firing was found to be illegal and he returned to work until the school board voted in September to buy out his contract. He left the position in November.

Martinez previously served as Deputy Superintendent for the Clark County and Washoe County School Districts. He is the former Chief Financial Officer at Chicago Public Schools.

Martinez was also named one of four finalists for superintendent of Boston Public Schools, but lost the position to someone else.

On May 4, 2015, the SAISD Board will hold a special meeting to select the next superintendent.
