Helping Families With Meals This Spring Break

The Food Bank's Kids Cafe program is a little different this Spring Break. It's now a grab and go style, and kids are given three days worth of meals at a time. This week, the Reno Elks Lodge lent a hand.

"We got a grant from the Elks National Foundation," said Elks Lodge member Rick Stone. "We did a food bag for the kids going on Spring Break before all this madness started and we had food left over that our members had donated putting the food bags together. So I picked it up and we delivered it to this school, Glenn Duncan, so they can use it instead of it just sitting on the shelves. It makes my heart feel good I was able to do this."

The lodge donated more than 130 bags of food this week, a big help during a time when food donations are become more and more critical in Northern Nevada.

Glenn Duncan is also part of the school pantry program through Communities in Schools of Western Nevada and the Food Bank. The hope is to keep that program going while schools are closed.

"It's open year round," said Carolina Juarez, who runs the pantry at Glenn Duncan. "I try to keep it open on Thursdays and I'm trying to open it up again. We can't have parents coming into the school but hopefully I can make it so it's a grab and go situation as well."

She says there's been all kinds of help for the students here...

"The help has been so amazing," Juarez said. The Food Bank comes by, NV Energy donates a lot of money, everyone is just scrambling around seeing how they can help and it's been so amazing to see."
