Household Hazardous Waste and E-Waste Collection This Weekend

This Saturday Waste Management is collecting Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) at their facility at 1455 E. Greg Street in Sparks.

"Household Hazardous Waste is those things you know logically don't belong in your garbage can, but you don't know where to put them," said Kendra Kostelecky, Communications Specialist with Waste Management.   "So that includes pesticides, paints, caustic cleaners and it may include your e-waste - monitors, TVs and batteries."

The first 50 pounds of HHW is free to drop off for residential customers in Washoe County.

"Anything under 50 pounds you can drop off free off charge," Kostelecky said.   "Anything over 50 pounds is a dollar a pound and there is a caveat - you have to be a residential customer of Waste Management in Washoe County.  So if you come from Fernley or Carson,  you are going to pay that dollar per pound."

Waste Management holds these collections twice a year and they're usually pretty popular.

"All of these items that you're bringing to be dropped off have to be handled a certain way so they're being categorized, logged and the crews are going to unload that and spend some time with you," Kostelecky said.   "But they're going to spend some time with the people in front of you too, so bring a book because you'll probably be in line anywhere from half an hour to an hour to get to the front of the line."

The hope is to keep potentially dangerous items out of the landfill and our open spaces.

"We don't want these things in the landfill but there are backup methods if it gets to the landfill," Kostelecky said.  "We especially don't want it in our open spaces.  People get frustrated, they get confused and they dump it and then it can get into our groundwater and we definitely don't want that."
