Construction on south bound I-580 is finally getting closer to completion.
NDOT crews tell Channel 2 that the construction is on time, and will be coming to an end this fall.Â
Â
"The crews have actually reconstructed concrete on four lanes of the interstate," said Meg Ragonese with NDOT. "Now, they're doing the critical finishing work. Â We're looking to wrap the major construction up on the project this fall."
Â
Since the major work began in the spring, four lanes of deteriorating, old roadway concrete have been removed and replaced on southbound i-580 between Glendale Avenue and Villanova Drive. Â But delays and congestion continues. In fact, Northern Nevadans drivers are avoiding this area all together just to dodge the traffic. Â Â Â Â
"In certain areas leading up to the I-580 work zone, we've actually seen traffic counts reduce as much as 40%, which means drivers are heading the advice to take different routes," she said.Â
This project comes with a $12.1 Million price tag, and more than 140,000 vehicles use the stretch of freeway each day.
