The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is alerting motorists that Interstate 80 will be closed overnight in both directions in south Placer County as crews raise the Horseshoe Bar Road Overcrossing.
Motorists can expect an eight-mile detour during the closure scheduled to start at 11 p.m. Tuesday, April 21 and end at approximately 5 a.m. Wednesday, April 22. The interstate will close again from 11 p.m. Wednesday, April 22, until approximately 5 a.m. Thursday April 23 for the “Raise80” project, which is increasing the vertical clearance of nine freeway overcrossings on Interstate 80 in south Placer County. Motorists are advised to allow extra travel time for the detour.
The Horseshoe Bar Road Overcrossing in Loomis is the fifth structure to be lifted. The Horseshoe Bar Road Overcrossing over I-80 will be closed through Wednesday, May 6 for overcrossing work. Weather or other unexpected events may prolong the work or cause construction activities to be rescheduled.
The nine overpass structures being raised on I-80 are between Magra Road and Loomis in Placer County. Six of the structures will have the bridge deck raised approximately two feet, and three of the structures will have the roadway below lowered to achieve the necessary clearance. When complete, all structures will meet today's federal clearance standards for high-profile vehicles and national defense, eliminating the need for most high-profile vehicles to use local roads as detours.
Detour Information:
Eastbound I-80 all traffic:
• Take the Sierra College Boulevard off-ramp toward Sierra College Boulevard.
• Take Sierra College Boulevard north toward Taylor Road.
• Take Taylor Road northeast toward the I-80/Highway 193 interchange.
• Head east on I-80 at the I-80/Highway 193 interchange.
Westbound I-80 all traffic:
• Take the Taylor Road off-ramp toward Taylor Road.
• Take Taylor Road southwest toward Sierra College Boulevard.
• Take Sierra College Boulevard south toward the Sierra College Boulevard interchange.
• Head west on I-80 at the Sierra College Boulevard interchange.
