K9 Games Reno Makes a Splash With New Dog Pool

There's a new place for dogs to take a dip and beat the heat this summer.

We first took you K9 Games Reno when they opened up their obstacle course at the beginning of the year. Since then, they have expanded with a new dog pool.

The dogs learn how to get over their fear of the water, get in shape, and swim.

Sierra is a puppy learning how to paddle her way through the water.

"They have the basic instinct, but they don't know how to control their body. So it's really important to just take your time, their confidence is what they really need. You can't just be throwing dogs into a pool and thinking that they're going to swim," said Vickie Rhode, the president of K9 Games Reno.

The new pool at K9 Games Reno is only 2 feet deep, so all types of dogs can slowly and safely get introduced to swimming. And the trainers can get right in the water with the dogs to help them along.

Bailey Lissner, one of the trainers said, "We can actually hold them stationary in there, which gets them not only physically exercised, but also mentally teaching them how to swim."

Nibbler has gotten past his fear of the water and now he's ready to dive right in.

But these pups aren't just learning how to swim. They're also getting a work out to build their core muscles.

"It's a fun way for us to exercise them and it's just another tool that we can use to not only train them, but also help with daily routine," said Lissner.

For dogs like Shadow wanting to go to the lake with his owner this summer, he's getting used to being on top of a kayak.

Rhode adds, "How to ride on it and balance on it and to build their confidence on it."

Of course safety is a part of the training. The trainers also show the dogs how to swim with and without a life vest.

"So that they get understanding how their body works in the water, so they get comfortable either way. It's a really important safety feature that we should all be doing when we take our dogs out on the boats this summer," said Rhode.

The introductory pool is not the only installment coming to K9 Games Reno. They are building a dock diving pool, 50 feet long, 20 feet wide, 4 feet deep. That will be coming in the next couple of months, but if you want to come check out this pool with your pup, they are having a Canine Pool Party this Sunday at 1 p.m. during their Yappy Hour.
