Nevada lawmakers are set to consider a resolution urging Congress to prevent federal officials from adding a citizenship question to the 2020 census.
Legislators from the state Assembly are expected to hear the resolution on Thursday.
The resolution states that several past Census Bureau directors have said a citizenship inquiry will lead to a lower census response rate in general. It says lowered participation could be particularly harmful for Nevada because almost 20 percent of state residents are immigrants, but only some are citizens.
It also argues Nevada stands to lose out on federal funding due to a lowered count.
The hearing comes days after Democratic Gov. Steve Sisolak created a committee to raise awareness and motivate state residents to be counted in the 2020 census.
