Parents Weigh in on WCSD Superintendent Change

Former Washoe County Superintendent Pedro Martinez will not be Boston's newest superintendent. The Boston School Committee on Tuesday voted 5-2 to select Dr. Tommy Chang instead as the final candidate for the Superintendent of Boston Public Schools.

Boston Mayor Martin Walsh released this statement:

"I want to congratulate and welcome Dr. Tommy Chang as Boston's selection for the new superintendent of public schools. Dr. Chang will provide the leadership that our school system needs and I am confident that his innovative views on education will move our students forward. We need a transformative leader and that is Tommy Chang.

"I thank the School Committee for their dedication to this process and commitment to the overall improvement of our system, and the Search Committee for providing several top candidates to lead our schools. Our city is full of talent and our young people deserve the best we can provide.”

Martinez was named one of four finalists for the position. Martinez received the two other votes.

Last month, Martinez told Channel 2 News he was approached for this position before he was approached by the Nevada Department of Education to serve as a superintendent in residence.

Martinez was fired from his job in Washoe County last year, but the firing was found to be illegal and he returned to work until the school board voted in September to buy out his contract. He left the position in November.

Martinez previously served as Deputy Superintendent for the Clark County and Washoe County School Districts. He is the former Chief Financial Officer at Chicago Public Schools.
