Washoe County's Republican Party is making some changes, starting with recently-elected Chairman, Adam Khan. He pronounces it "Au-tum" not Adam - and that's not the only thing that sets him apart. He's a Pakistani-American and a recent University of Nevada graduate. And I mean very recent. He's just 24 years old.
"I think my age is a huge advantage," Khan says. "The Republican Party has an image of antiquated policies and old people and that's just not the case. Our ideas of smaller government and lower taxes are ideas that transcend generations. The Republican Party is not the party of the past, it's the party of the future!"
He has the backing of experience in the party, like former Chairman David Buell.
"He is young but he has a lot of energy. He has a lot of experience with social media and that will certainly help us. And he has a lot of experience around him. He's the right face for the Republican Party."
Political pundit Fred Lokken who teaches political science at TMCC, says it's the right move forward.
"This is a bold step for the Washoe County Republican Party," Lokken said. "And it's a good move. They need to rediscover youth in the population."
According to the latest numbers from Washoe County, there are bout 6,000 more registered Republicans than Democrats in the county right now. But Khan says his ideas will grown that margin.
"I plan to continue the red wave that began in 2014 and that will continue through 2016 and beyond."
