Missing Plane Found in Rugged Sierra Nevada Mountains

A Cessna plane, that went missing Sunday near Lake Tahoe, has been located.

El Dorado County Sheriff's Sgt. Tasha Thompson said the plane, which was returning to the Sacramento area from Idaho, was reported missing Saturday, October 15 in the evening. Its last known position was in a rugged area of the mountain range, southwest of Lake Tahoe. The pilot of the plane has been identified as 52-year-old Tyrell Kramer.

The search for the pilot and aircraft was called off Sunday due to stormy weather, but resumed Monday morning.

Around 4:15 Tuesday afternoon, the missing aircraft wreckage was located in a rugged area of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, southwest of Lake Schmidell.

Crews also located a deceased male subject outside of the wreckage. Officials say they cannot yet confirm the identity of the body.

Crews with the California Air National Guard and the California Highway Patrol with a ground crew of more than 40 people searched for the plane.

Sunday, The Civil Air Patrol released this initial statement:

“A Cessna aircraft returning to the Sacramento area from Idaho with a single pilot on-board has been reported overdue. The California Wing of the Civil Air Patrol was activated by the United States Air Force Rescue Coordination Center at Tyndall Air Force Base and the El Dorado Sheriff’s Department has been activated by the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services to search for the missing aircraft. The CAP National Radar Analysis Team and the CAP Celluar Forensics Team are also supporting the search.”

“The last known position of the aircraft is in a rugged area of the Sierra Nevada Mountains southwest of Lake Tahoe. Weather is hampering the ability to launch search aircraft but ground teams are assembling to hike into the area. Once weather clears, both the Civil Air Patrol and the El Dorado County Sheriff are prepared to launch search aircraft.”
