The Nevada Legislature Building now has a brand new dome as part of an extensive remodeling project.

"It's all about history and the greatness of Nevada," said Carson City resident Bill Pierce after the new dome was placed.

The silver dome is approximately 5,000 pounds and was constructed by a company called Spengler Industries out of Utah.

The dome was the final piece of the remodel for the west part of the overall remodeling project. The full project for the building isn't done yet.

"We've watched the progress on the legislative building, and it's just all part of history. We figured our great-grandchildren will get to experience the facts of what we're seeing today, as far as the finishing touches being put on the building," said Pierce.

He adds, "The finishing touches of the building are something that you maybe only experience once in a lifetime."

NV Company Plenium Builders did the work with the crane on Tuesday to get the dome lifted into place and installed, and the Western Nevada Building Group helped by installing insulation and shingles on the dome, and helped to coordinate getting the dome installed.

The back side of the legislative building is still a work in progress; it's planned to be completed in August.

They're also still working on the parking garage. They're building it with a roof to protect even top-level parkers from the elements, and they're installing solar panels that will reduce power costs for the building by 50%.

Jon Vietti, with the Legislative Council Bureau, says, "When the building was originally built, it was with materials that lasted 20-30 years. We tried to pick out products that would last 100 years or more."

They also want to encourage anyone to come by, check out the update, and walk the Capitol grounds to see all of the improvements so far.

Pierce also says, "It's beautiful; it turned out great. I mean, it's a nice accent to the Capitol and the legislative building and all that. All the administrative functions they do. Nevada is a great place, and we enjoy living here very much, and it's a beautiful city."
