From Nevada Appellate Courts:

Nevada Supreme Court Justice Nancy M. Saitta has announced her retirement in an official letter to Governor Brian Sandoval effective August 8, 2016.

“After nearly 20 years as a judicial officer, with 10 of those years as a Justice of the Nevada Supreme Court, I have decided that it is time to move on to the next chapter,” Justice Saitta said.

“After careful consideration, I am confident that this is the right time for me. My work on the court has been tremendously rewarding. I consider myself fortunate to have had the opportunity to be of service to the courts and the citizens of the State of Nevada. I am grateful to have had such an amazing experience.”

Justice Saitta, 65, said she intends to continue working on child and juvenile advocacy issues and will continue to chair the Blue Ribbon for Kids Commission, the Coalition to Combat Criminal Sexual Exploitation of Children and the Juvenile Justice Reform Commission. She also will serve as a senior judge.

The seven permanent members of the Commission on Judicial Selection will now recruit, screen, and interview applicants. The Commission then nominates three finalists from which the Governor makes his appointment.  This thorough, complex, and public process usually takes about 4 months to complete.

All applicants will complete an online application. The Commission will review materials digitally saving copy costs and staff time.

The Commission on Judicial Selection is composed of seven permanent members – the Supreme Court Chief Justice, three non-attorneys appointed by the Governor, and three attorneys appointed by the State Bar of Nevada. Neither the Governor nor the Bar may appoint more than two permanent members from the same political party, and cannot appoint two members from the same county.

On behalf of all Nevadans, I thank Justice Saitta for her dedicated service as a judicial officer,” said Governor Brian Sandoval. “Justice Saitta has been a personal friend of the Sandoval family and Kathleen and I are excited to watch her pursue this new chapter in her life. Her passionate advocacy for juvenile justice reform and protecting the most vulnerable in our community is unmatched and we are fortunate to continue working with her in this capacity.

I will issue a letter to Chief Justice Parraguirre officially notifying him of a vacancy on the Nevada Supreme Court. The Commission on Judicial Selection will begin its formal process and I will give careful and thoughtful consideration to Justice Saitta’s replacement,” concluded Sandoval.
