Severe Thunderstorm warning

A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect for several counties in northern California and western Nevada, with strong winds and hail expected to cause damage.

The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Plumas, Sierra, and southeastern Lassen counties in northern California, as well as southern Washoe County in western Nevada, until 4:15 p.m. PDT.

At 3:40 p.m. PDT, radar detected a severe thunderstorm near Cold Springs Valley, approximately 9 miles northwest of Verdi, moving east at 20 mph.

The storm is producing wind gusts up to 60 mph and quarter-size hail.

Authorities expect hail damage to cars and wind damage to roofs, siding, fencing, and trees in the affected areas.

Locations impacted include Cold Springs, Cold Springs Valley, Verdi-Mogul, U.S. 395 near the California-Nevada state line at Bordertown, and U.S. 395 near the Sierra-Lassen county line.

Officials advise residents to move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building for protection.
