Early voting for the midterm election starts on Saturday and will last for two weeks.

The registrar of voters says the first two days of early voting are usually the busiest, but Election Day is when people wait the longest in line.

Because of those wait times, they've launched their "Don't Wait, Washoe" campaign to encourage folks to vote early.

They told us the community is a huge help during this time.

Reggie Greer, the Deputy Registrar of Voters for Washoe County, told us, "We hire up to 500-550 election workers throughout our office and throughout the vote centers themselves to conduct the election so the community is hired, they're trained, and then they're deployed out to all the different vote centers throughout the community so it's really the community hosting the election."

They tell us preparation for early voting starts by testing all the equipment two weeks before voting starts, to ensure everything is working properly.

Greer said, "Now is the time that we're deploying all of that equipment to each voting center location today. That equipment will be set up, and it will be ready for the election to start tomorrow."

They share how casting a vote by mail takes the longest time to process, taking up to seven hours once received.

That’s why they encourage all folks who can go during the early voting window to take the time and do so, stating it could take as little as 15 minutes.

Greer said, "We also have a couple of new spots as well, so we are reaching out through every avenue that we can to get that message out there so people can go out. They do know that voting is starting, and it's not just election day to cast your vote. You can do it anytime in that period leading up to the election."

And when it comes to Election Day, they ramp up their locations to help ensure everyone has multiple options.

Greer also said, "For Election Day, what we've done is we have 41, five of those, and if you include UNR, six are supercenters, and all a supercenter is, is a larger voting center so that votes can be processed faster and there are fewer lines there, so spread out throughout the community."

All locations will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. during the early voting window.
