The Carson Valley Community Food Closet is experiencing a food shortage.

The nonprofit says its worried about having enough supply as the holidays are just around the corner.

The food closet says this is the worst they've seen it in quite some time.

They've seen double the amount of people this year and that has them running lower on supplies.

"We seem to be getting more and more families in need and then we have less and less food to go around," said Patti Turner, Volunteer at Carson Valley Community Food Closet.

With the food closet seeing more people this year, they say the need for donations is even greater.

"If we don't start to see an uptick in donations, both monetary, so we can purchase, and then in kind so we can see those shelves get filled immediately, we're going to be hurting come mid holidays," said Sarah Sanchez, Director at Carson Valley Community Food Closet.

Sanchez says it's harder for them to get ahead, with more being in need.

She says summer and fall are usually when they're lower on stock, but this year it's worse.

The last thing they want is to cut down on how much they give or have to turn people away.

"Imagining having to turn someone away would be detrimental," Sanchez said. "It would be so heartbreaking."

The nonprofit says they're still collecting as much food as they can.

They say people tend to be more generous around the holidays.

So, they're banking on that to help get more donations because they know a lot of people need it.

"People just rely on the food pantry to come and... actually, that's how they survive," Turner said.

Sanchez says they serve over one thousand people in the course of the month, with about 600 households.

For one client who has gone for three years, she says couldn't make ends meet without it.

"It has been a life saver," said Paula Spreeter, Food Closet Client. "As a senior with inflation and the cost of gas I have just been devastated financially. My income has been cut in half and because of this food closet, I can pay rent."

Spreeter says she couldn't imagine a world without the food closet.

"We'd be in trouble," she said. "I'd be in trouble. I could not pay, and I have low rent and I could not pay my rent. I'd be in trouble. Most the people in here, probably all of them, we'd be in trouble."

The food closet is hoping to get in front of it now, so it doesn't affect the holidays or next year.

So, they're asking for all the help they can get.

"Anything that you can do, your time, buying food and bringing it here is really appreciated," Turner said.

You would like to help, you can drop food off at their pantry at 1251 Waterloo Ln in Gardnerville from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday.
