Reno Police detectives arrested three people after a man was stabbed and killed back in August at an area park.

48-year-old Juan Francisco-Martinez was found with multiple stab wounds at John Champion Park near downtown Reno around 10:50 p.m. on August 9.

He died early the next morning. According to court documents obtained by 2 News Nevada, the autopsy revealed that the victim had six stab wounds to his chest.

Police, at the time, did not have any suspects, and no knife was found at the scene.

After months of investigating, 25-year-old Lucky Vaavale, 40-year-old Joshua Peaslee, and 53-year-old Jerry Ruch were charged in the crime.

Ruch was already in Washoe County Jail for possession of a stolen car, and police added the additional charge.

All three face a second-degree murder with a deadly weapon charge.

"With these investigations, depending on the depth of the investigation, possible admissions, things like that, just speaking broadly, detectives can then determine what the degree of homicide is," said Officer Hunter Mercurio, Reno Police Department. "Every case is different."

According to probable cause documents, a woman accused Francisco-Martinez of sexually assaulting her in a tent along the Truckee River.

After she followed him, the woman told a group of men that the man on the bridge, who was allegedly Francisco-Martinez, had raped her.

The three men are accused of running to the bridge, where Vaavale and Ruch said they assaulted Francisco-Martinez by punching and kicking him, according to documents.

The documents say Peaslee supposedly told others he stabbed the victim.

The three took off from the scene, where Peaslee allegedly had the knife, and drove off.

Vaavale allegedly washed his hands and gave the victim's phone to someone who threw it in the Truckee River, where the phone was later discovered by search and rescue divers.

The documents say none of the three attempted to call 911 and left Francisco-Martinez alone.

Another person who was not involved then came upon the victim, told his roommate, and that's who called 911.

Both Vaavale and Ruch initially lied about being near the scene, but both later admitted to punching and kicking the victim.

Peaslee allegedly texted his mother about the events around the homicide from text messages recovered by detectives.

All three suspects had a bail hearing on Wednesday, but the defense counsel wanted to move it to next week.
