A fire burning south of Ely is now estimated at 8,200 acres with 0% containment.
The Ward Fire started Friday near Ward Mountain, approximately nine miles south of Ely in White Pine County.
Firefighters say they made good progress on Sunday as established containment lines held despite strong winds testing the fire's perimeter. Dozers, engines, helitack, hand crews, and Hotshot crews will continue strengthening containment lines and conducting burnout operations where conditions allow to remove unburned fuels ahead of the fire. A community meeting will be held Monday, August 3, from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Bristlecone Convention Center in downtown Ely to give the latest information on the Ward Fire. Fire managers along with cooperating local agencies will be on hand to answer questions from the public.
A live stream option is available on the White Pine Main Street Facebook page.
More than 235 personnel are working the fire.
There's no immediate word on a full containment date, or why it started.
