The High Wind Watch is now a warning for the Sierra Front, including Reno, Carson City, and Minden. The warning goes from 2 PM Wednesday through 11 AM Thursday for wind gusts up to 60 mph, but wind prone areas like Washoe Valley could see wind gusts up to 80 mph.
Wind speeds will range from 30 to 40 mph on Wednesday into Thursday, with gusts up to 60 mph for most locations. Wind prone areas like Washoe Valley and along 395 could see wind gusts up to 80 mph.
Wind speeds will be strong enough to snap tree branches, down power lines, cancel or delay flights, and flip over high profile vehicles.
It will be windy all day Wednesday, but the worst of the wind will be late Wednesday into Thursday morning.
A High Wind Warning is in effect for the Truckee Meadows, and down through Minden and Gardnerville from Wednesday evening through Thursday morning as a result. Make sure to stay fire aware as well.
Wind speeds will be strong enough to topple over high profile vehicles along 580 south towards Carson City late Wednesday into Thursday. Make sure to keep both hands on the steering wheel.
The wind will make it tough for any rain to spill over to the valley floor late Wednesday. There will be a few showers pop up on Tuesday, but there will be a lot of shadowing on Wednesday. The rain shadow effect keeps the majority of the precipitation on the leeward side of the mountains, and dry on the other.
The ingredients are there for a down slope wind event late Wednesday into Thursday, which is a big reason why the National Weather issued the warning. The 700 mph jet will be strong with knots in the 70 mph range, plus an inversion. All necessary ingredients for a downslope wind event in the valley.
It will be windy in the Sierra as well, with wind gusts topping 70 mph. Ridgetops could see wind gusts around 100 mph.
A High Wind Warning is also posted for Mono County from 2 pm Wednesday through 11 am Thursday where wind speeds will range from 35 to 45 miles per hour. Wind prone areas could see wind gusts up to 65 mph, and ridgetops could see wind gusts up to 100 mph.
