On Wednesday night at Hugh High, the Hawks played host to division 5A boys soccer rivals, the McQueen Lancers.
Hug won the matchup 2-0 and also celebrated Senior Night.
The teams last faced off on September 24, and Hug also won that match 1-0.Â
Hug is now tied with the Sparks Railroaders for first in the league, as both teams will seek to take their impressive 17-1 regular season records into the postseason tournament.Â
We heard from Hug Hawks Head Coach Nico Moreno about what makes this night and team special.
"For seniors tonight, this is your last game. How do you guys want to finish this season? After tonight's game, it could be your last game, or it could go all the way to regionals on the state. So it's up to you guys to maintain this intensity for the motivation," he said.
Coach Moreno says he is blessed to be at Hug and have a great supporting staff of coaches.Â
Those coaches touched on how they are able to help these student-athletes both on the field and off.Â
"Our philosophy is school first and soccer second. I always found that if (these) guys perform in practice, that's how it's going to show out on the field," said Assistant Coach Alex Ramirez.Â
"I think it's definitely really important to be able to give a safe place, a place where they're allowed to be themselves, you know, without the worries of whatever is going on in the world," said Assistant Coach Francisco Lopez-Cabrera.Â
These Hug coaches look forward to continuing to impact these players, this school, and the community.Â
With the team now tied with Sparks for the lead of the division, playoff seeding will come down to stat tiebreakers.Â
