Local casinos are now hiring full- and part-time positions, and they told us that the winter season slowdown is a great opportunity for new employees to learn how different positions within the casinos work.
Casinos told us that they try and make the training process a fast one, but depending on the role, the hiring process can take anywhere from three days to three weeks.
The Human Resources (HR) Director for the Atlantis told us there's a lot of job availability and room to grow.
“So there’s a lot of places to get started," said Heather Kinnear, the Atlantis Casino HR Director. "If you want something fast like our guest facing hospitality positions, show us what you got and build a career from there.”
Hospitality is key when applying for a casino job.
“While there might be different skill sets for different jobs, they key fundamental, cultural part of our company is that passion for service," Kinnear said. "If you love to create an experience for somebody else, if you love to bring a smile to their face, you are going to be a good fit for hospitality.”
Will Holloway, the J Resorts Director of Table Games told us that they can teach anyone how to deal or operate a table, so what they're looking for in a potential employee are things you can't teach.
“Positive attitude, motivation, pleasantness, politeness things that we can't teach the intangibles what we’re looking for if we can find that we can teach anyone how to deal these games,” Holloway said.
He told us that they've implemented hiring bonuses, bumping employees up to a higher pay scale, and free in house training.
“We’re under brand new management," Holloway said. "We come experienced. We come trained. We know the money is out there. We want to help these people get the funds they need to live their lives. Some people want to buy houses, help with ill relatives. We want to help with that.”
Craig Levesque, the Vice President of Gaming and General Manger for J Resort said that they're also looking for potential candidates to fill all of their departments across the board like food and beverage at their new restaurants.
Levesque said it's been a challenge hiring for their table game because Reno doesn't have a dealer's school.
“Dealer schools are beneficial to fill spots, and to teach people skills," Levesque said. "We on the other hand, are also looking at teaching people who have great personalities and great customer service skills and then teach them the skills to be dealers.”
He also told us it's been a struggle to fill positions in the hospitality industry overall.
“After COVID there’s been a struggle to refill some of those positions in the hospitality industry and we're no exception to that," Levesque said.
