On Monday, the Boys & Girls Club of Western Nevada opened the William N. Pennington Center Smart Start in Carson City.

The Boys & Girls Club said it decided to open a Smart Start in the northwest part of the city because of nearby businesses.

"This is intentional because of Carson Tahoe Health, which is up the street. [There's a] ton of manufacturing over on the north side of Carson City," said Brett Zunino, CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada.

Zunino said their other Smart Starts in the state capital are in the central part of the city.

The Pennington Center will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The building's license says it has enough room for 78 total kids, including 71 kids between one and five years old and seven infants.

"We take the infants as well. They're the longest waiting list we have," Zunino said.

The Pennington Center website says annual membership is 100 dollars, and weekly care ranges between $230 and $290 dollars a week, depending on how old your child is.

According to The Children's Cabinet, the average yearly price is $9,166 for four-year-olds and $10,804 for infants. This is about $175-$200 weekly.

Statewide, the numbers go up to over $12,659/year for infants and $10,605 for four-year-olds. Broken down weekly, that's about $200-240 every seven days.

The Children's Cabinet says 72% of Nevadans live in a childcare desert, which means there's either no childcare, or there's three children for each available seat.

Zunino says the Boys and Girls Club's four preschools in the area have enough spots for just under 400 children. They estimate about 1200 kids in the Carson City area need childcare.

A lot of parents not only need high-quality childcare, but they also need it to be affordable. Zunino said the Boys & Girls Club has multiple resources to lower the cost for parents.

"We do a ton of fundraising," Zunino said, "and we have a lot of generous sponsors to help us keep right there for parents so it's affordable and accessible."
