14-year-old Lexi Rodriguez was hit and killed by a car while trying to cross a crosswalk Sunday night.

The Carson City Sheriff's Office is now encouraging the community to pay closer attention, both pedestrians and drivers.

Family and friends are continuing to push for flashing lights to be installed at the crosswalk.

Sheriff Ken Furlong, Carson City Sheriff's Office, tells us that unfortunately Lexi isn't the only person who recently lost their life by being hit by a car crossing the street.

"We lost a young girl up in Lyon County, a 9-year-old, we lost a 14-year-old now this week, and less than 24 hours later an 81-year-old female was crossing the street in the crosswalk and she was hit by a car," said Furlong. "Folks we need to slow down. We need to realize that we all are the solution."

Sheriff furlong says pedestrians need to pay just as much attention as drivers. It's also important to wear bright colored clothing when walking at night and make eye contact with drivers before you start crossing.

"These are all warnings that people keep in mind," said Furlong. "We never think it's going to happen to us, and god help us we never think it's going to happen to our child, and when it does it's just a catastrophic event."

Lexi's family is asking for the community's help to sign their petition to get flashing pedestrian lights installed at the North Carson Street and Nye Lane crosswalk. If you would like to sign it, you can click here.
