Snow and ice prompt widespread school, state, and office closures and delays across the region
What started with a few delayed school openings has turned into a sweeping round of closures and delays across Northern Nevada, as snow, ice, and deteriorating road conditions continue to create problems.
Because of icy and hazardous roads, Joe Lombardo announced an early closure of state offices in northwestern Nevada on Thursday. The governor cited worsening conditions as the reason for shutting down offices ahead of the normal end of the workday.
State offices close early
The early closure applies to state offices in northwestern Nevada as road conditions continue to worsen.
2-hour delays in effect
Bishop Manogue High School shifted to a virtual learning day.
All Washoe County School District schools are operating on a 2-hour delay schedule. Winter bus stops are in effect, and all morning half-day early childhood programs are canceled.
Pinecrest Academy, Mater Academy, KidsLife Child Development Center, and St. John’s Children’s Center are also on a 2-hour delay.
The Carson City School District said classes will resume as normal on Thursday.
After-school programs called off
The Carson City School District says, "All after-school activities, including student programs and practices, are canceled today, February 19."
The district said this includes Capital Kids and all athletic practices, clubs, academic programming, and sports contests and scrimmages. The Boys and Girls Club will remain open in the evening.
School buses will operate on the regular release schedule in the afternoon. If people normally pick up their children after school, they are asked to be there at the regular dismissal time. All activities inside or outside school and district buildings are canceled in the evening. The buildings and parking areas will be closed to ensure successful snow removal.

Coral Academy of Science Reno has closed all five campuses. Child care is also closed at all school locations.

At Truckee Meadows Community College, on-campus operations, in-person classes, remote classes and remote work were canceled from noon onward Thursday following the governor’s announcement. All TMCC physical locations, including the Child Care Center, remain closed.
Sparks cancels programs
Weather conditions also led the City of Sparks to cancel all after-school programs on Thursday, February 19, at Lincoln Park, Bud Beasley, Jesse Hall, Sepulveda, Van Gorder, John Bohach, Katherine Dunn, Florence Drake, and Caughlin Elementary schools.
Caughlin Ranch Elementary sent a message to families that read, "Update: Sierra Kids is canceled for today. There is no Sierra Kids on Thursday, 2/19. Thank you for understanding this change."
Officials across the region continue to point to icy streets and changing conditions as the reason for the widespread impacts, as crews work to clear roads and parking areas.
