The Elko Police Department is investigating a domestic violence call that turned into a homicide.

On July 27, officers were called to a domestic violence incident at a home on Opal Drive. 

Inside they found a woman who had severe facial injuries and was not breathing. 

The woman, later identified as Daisy Cortez, was taken to a nearby hospital before being airlifted to Utah for further medical treatment. Despite lifesaving efforts, Cortez died from her injuries. 

Santos Cortez-Molina was initially arrested on charges of domestic better with substantial bodily harm.  His charges were later upgraded to murder.
