Fernley City Councilman Stan Lau has been taken into custody and booked into the Lyon County Jail on charges including battery and injury to property.

Lyon County Sheriff's Office deputies were dispatched to the area of Shadow Lane and U.S. 50 Alternate in Fernley on Monday, just before 3 p.m., for reports of an altercation, according to a release from the LCSO.

When deputies arrived, they met with a construction crew working in the area.

One of the workers reported he was approached by Lau, who was upset about traffic controls in the area. An argument happened, and Lau allegedly grabbed the sunglasses off the worker's face, causing a minor injury.

The worker said Lau broke his sunglasses and threw them on the ground, according to the release. When the worker went to pick the glasses up, he said Lau punched him in the face.

The LCSO says no physical evidence of the punch was located, and that Lau left the scene before deputies arrived.

The worker requested criminal charges against Lau and to place him under citizen’s arrest. Deputies investigated and determined probable cause to conduct an arrest.

Lau was taken into custody on a citizen's arrest, owing to the fact that the incident happened outside the presence of any deputies on the scene.

He was booked into the Lyon County Jail for battery and injury to property. His bail on each charge was set at $1,140.

Anyone with information in this incident is asked to contact the Lyon County Communication Center at (775) 463-6620 and request to speak with Deputy Steven Vawter.
